Why Every School Needs a Strong Sports Programme

Many institutions especially universities in our country tend to take sports seriously only during inter-universities sports competitions, overlooking that sports carry far greater value beyond those few events. While institutions often treat sports as something mandatory only when competitions approach, they overlook the daily benefits that regular physical activities bring to learners.

First, sports participation greatly improves learners’ physical wellbeing. Students who actively take part in physical activities maintain a healthy weight, stay fit, and reduce the risk of health complications such as heart disease, high blood pressure, obesity, and even some types of cancer.

It is therefore important for institutions; primary schools, high schools, colleges, and universities to treat sports as a mandatory part of their curriculum. Doing so, strengthens the future generation by promoting a lifestyle of good health and wellness.

Secondly, sports teach learners how to work together, communicate effectively, and support one another as a team. Through these interactions, students build strong friendships, cooperation and respect, qualities they carry into adulthood.

Thirdly, involvement in sports also contributes to learners’ mental and emotional wellbeing. Physical activities help reduce stress and anxiety, which are common among students. Sports teach discipline, resilience, and time management skills that help learners balance academics with extra-curricular activities.

In my view, making sports a core part of the school curriculum offers countless benefits. Beyond promoting physical health, teamwork, and personal development, sports help in shaping well-rounded individuals who are ready to contribute positively to society. When institutions ensure that all learners participate in sports activities, they help nurture a more confident, healthier, and better-skilled generation.
