Safaricom will temporarily suspend its Fuliza overdraft service on Monday morning as engineers carry out a planned upgrade to the system. The pause, set for 0100 Hrs to 0200 Hrs on 17th November, 2025 is expected to cause short interruptions but will not affect the rest of the M-PESA platform.
In a notice issued on Saturday, the company said the upgrade was part of routine work aimed at improving security and keeping the service steady as more Kenyans depend on digital payments.
“We are continually improving our platform to connect customers with innovations and a better experience the upgrade supports its promise to offer “always-on, safe, secure, and worry-free financial products,” the statement read.

Fuliza allows customers to complete payments even when their balance has fallen short. It is widely used across the country, both by individual account holders and by small businesses. Ordinary users rely on it to send money, clear bills through Lipa na M-PESA, buy airtime, or withdraw cash. Businesses use Fuliza ya Biashara to pay suppliers, move funds between tills, settle utilities, and handle withdrawals.
Safaricom said it chose the early-morning window to reduce inconvenience, noting that most transactions occur during the day. The firm apologised for any disruption and thanked customers for what it called steady support.
The announcement comes a month after Safaricom completed a major upgrade to its wider M-PESA system, known internally as Fintech 2.0. That project was designed to handle rising transaction volumes and expand the system’s capacity as digital finance continues to grow across Kenya.
Safaricom said it would share updates if anything changed, but assured customers that the interruption would be brief and limited to Fuliza alone.
