President Ruto Receives Proposals on AU Reforms Ahead of Luanda Summit

President William Ruto, the AU Champion for Institutional Reforms, has received key proposals on African Union reforms ahead of the Luanda Summit 2025.

President William Samoei Ruto, in his capacity as the African Union (AU) Champion for Institutional Reforms, has received a comprehensive report from a high-level panel of eminent experts outlining key proposals to guide the next phase of the African Union’s institutional transformation.

The presentation took place during a high-level meeting in Nairobi on Tuesday, bringing together members of the High-Level Panel on AU Governance, Peace and Security, the High Representative on Financing the Union, senior officials from the African Union Commission (AUC), the Kenya Mission in Addis Ababa, officials from Kenya’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Special Envoy for AU Institutional Reform.

Focus on Reforms Ahead of Luanda Summit

The report presented to President Ruto comes ahead of the Special Summit on African Union Reforms, scheduled for November 26, 2025, in Luanda, Angola.

The summit is expected to deliberate on crucial proposals aimed at strengthening the Union’s governance and operational frameworks.

The panel emphasized the need for Africa to reposition itself amidst the ongoing global geopolitical reset, calling for renewed commitment to the ideals of Pan-Africanism and collective self-reliance.

Recommendations also called for the revitalization of Pan-African solidarity, the enhancement of institutional efficiency, and the modernization of AU organs to effectively address emerging peace, governance, and development challenges across the continent.

Call for Renewed Commitment from Member States

The meeting concluded with a strong appeal for renewed commitment from all AU Member States and stakeholders to accelerate the reform agenda.

President Ruto reaffirmed his dedication to ensuring that the continental reforms deliver tangible impact for African citizens.

The upcoming Luanda Summit is expected to adopt a consolidated framework to guide the implementation of these recommendations and lay the foundation for a more responsive, effective, and people-centered African Union.
