Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya woke up to a troubling reality. His personal and residential security had been withdrawn in the early hours of Wednesday morning, a move that comes days after a violent incident at a public rally.
Speaking to Citizen Digital, the governor said officers who had been guarding his home and escorting him were pulled out at around midnight. No formal explanation had been given to him at the time of publication.
“This is not just about me,” Natembeya said. “It raises serious questions about safety and the intentions behind such a decision.”
The development follows a chaotic scene on Saturday, November 22, when armed attackers ambushed Natembeya during a rally at Chwele Ward in Kabuchai, Bungoma County. Video clips shared online showed damaged vehicles and a shaken crowd fleeing in panic. The governor later claimed that gunshots were fired as the attackers moved in.
In the same incident, the home of Kabuchai MP Majimbo Kalasinga was also vandalised. Natembeya, while inspecting the wreckage, accused National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula of using state power to intimidate political rivals.
“This is so primitive. This is not politics,” Natembeya said. “Your leader in the National Assembly is the one doing these things. Sending goons to destroy the home of a fellow MP because of different political views.”
Wetangula has not issued a public response to the accusations. His allies have in the past dismissed similar claims as political theatrics and called for calm and adherence to the rule of law.
Security agencies have also remained silent on the decision to withdraw the governor’s protection or on the progress of investigations into the Bungoma attack.
Political observers warn that such incidents deepen mistrust and make public service dangerous. They say leaders should seek dialogue and lawful channels rather than acts that risk lives and property.
