Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has sharply criticized Pastor James Ng’ang’a over comments the preacher made regarding Sonko’s daughter, Salma Mbuvi’s alleged gender-based violence incident.
Pastor Ng’ang’a during one of his televised sermons doing rounds on social media suggested that the former governor should have kept the matter private instead of publicizing the ordeal, claiming that he used his vast resources to embarrass and humiliate the daughter’s spouse.
In a strongly worded online statement circulating on social media, Sonko condemned the pastor’s remarks, accusing him of insensitivity and failure to stand with survivors of GBV.
“Shame on you Pastor Ng’ang’a. May God forgive you. May God forgive you for misleading the public; may God forgive you for not speaking for women and other people who are facing this GBV issue,” Sonko said.
Sonko Calls During 16 Days of Activism
Sonko emphasized that the timing of Pastor Ng’ang’a’s comments was particularly unfortunate as the world prepares to mark the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.
“We shall be having 16 full days appealing to the world, seeking support and solidarity in ending this global violence against women and girls,” he stated, urging the public not to be distracted by the controversial remarks.
The former governor reiterated that the alleged assault on his daughter was real and deeply painful, stressing his responsibility as a parent to speak up.
“What happened to me is true. It happened. It hurts. And as a parent, I cannot sit and wait for the day my daughter will be killed by her violent husband,” he said.
Sonko’s remarks have sparked widespread debate online, with many Kenyans weighing in on the broader issue of GBV.
