Tanzanian opposition, Chama cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (CHADEMA) has raised serious concerns over the whereabouts of its National Vice Chairperson, Hon. John Heche, who was reportedly taken by police officers under unclear circumstances on Tuesday.
According to a statement issued by the party’s Director of Communication and Publicity, Brenda Rupia, Hon. Heche was seized by officers from Mtumba Police Station, who claimed he was being summoned by the Dodoma Regional Police Commander (RPC).
The incident allegedly occurred in the presence of his wife and the party’s Central Zone Secretary, Ms. Ashura Masoud.
“When they tried to follow the vehicles carrying him to find out where he was being taken, the vehicles sped off, leaving them behind,” the statement reads.
CHADEMA officials later went to the office of the Dodoma RPC to verify the alleged summons, but claim they were informed that the RPC had no knowledge of any such directive involving Hon. Heche.
The opposition party now says Hon. Heche’s location and condition remain unknown, sparking fears for his safety.
“As of now, his whereabouts remain unknown, and his family and the Party are deeply concerned about his safety and current location,” Ms. Rupia stated.
In its strongly worded statement, CHADEMA has demanded immediate clarification from top police officials, including Inspector General of Police (IGP) Camillius Wambura, Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Ramadhan Kingai, the Dodoma RPC, and the Officer Commanding Mtumba Police Station.

“We demand an immediate public explanation regarding the whereabouts and safety of Honorable John Heche,” the statement adds.
The incident has heightened tensions between the opposition and state authorities, following an election marred by protests which incumbent Samia Suluhu won with the absence of major rivals.
