The Kenyan court has set December 16 as the next mention date in the long-running murder case of Agnes Wanjiru, after confirmation that the prime suspect, Robert James Purkiss, is in the custody of British authorities.

High Court Judge Alexander Muteti directed the mention following an update from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP). Purkiss, a former British soldier, is accused of killing Wanjiru in 2012.

“We have received updated communication that the suspect is being held by UK authorities. The UK courts will be handling case management on December 9, and we request a mention date after that,” the prosecution told the court.

The British courts are scheduled to conduct case management proceedings on December 9 as part of the ongoing extradition process. At the December 16 mention, the ODPP is expected to brief the Kenyan court on the outcome of the UK proceedings and outline the next steps.

The family of Agnes Wanjiru, through their lawyer, welcomed the update, praising the collaboration between the two governments.

“We appreciate the work being done by both the Kenyan and UK governments in this matter,” the family said. They also cautioned that extradition processes can be slow and procedural, requiring patience.

Legal experts note that while extradition can be complex, the December 16 mention is likely to provide a clearer picture of how the case will proceed and what steps remain in the pursuit of justice.
