Shakahola Burials Begin Two Years After Discovery of Mass Graves

Two years after the Shakahola tragedy, families have begun burying their loved ones.

Two years after the shocking discovery of mass graves in Shakahola Forest, families of victims linked to controversial preacher Paul Mackenzie have begun burying their loved ones.

On Thursday, emotional scenes unfolded at the Malindi Mortuary as relatives arrived to collect the remains of their kin. Authorities confirmed that at least 16 bodies had been released to families so far, with hundreds more still awaiting identification.

According to human rights activist Walid Sketty, 60 victims have been positively matched to DNA samples, while over 300 bodies remain unclaimed.

Officials said the process of releasing the bodies will continue in phases over the coming days as more families travel to Malindi.

The Shakahola massacre is considered one of the most disturbing cases of mass deaths in Kenya’s history. It was linked to the extremist teachings of Good News International Church pastor Paul Mackenzie, who allegedly radicalized followers to fast to death in order to “meet Jesus.”

Mackenzie and several of his associates are facing charges, as investigations into the full scope of the tragedy remain ongoing.

For the affected families, the burial of their loved ones marks a step toward closure after years of painful waiting and uncertainty.
