Kenya’s football fans have a new reason to cheer.
Teenage sensation Aldrine Kibet has been called up to the Harambee Stars senior squad for the first time, marking a major milestone in his fast-rising career.
Head coach Benni McCarthy announced his final list for two international friendlies in Turkey next month, with Kibet’s inclusion drawing the biggest reaction from fans and pundits alike.
The 19-year-old midfielder, who plays for Celta Vigo in Spain, has impressed with his sharp playmaking and composure on the ball — traits that have quickly made him one of Kenya’s most promising young talents.
“It’s a dream come true,” Kibet said in a brief statement shared on social media. “Playing for the national team has always been my goal. I’m ready to give my best for Kenya.”
A New Generation Beckons
The upcoming matches — against Madagascar on November 14 and Comoros on November 17 or 18 in Antalya, Turkey — fall within the FIFA international window. They will be Kenya’s final friendlies before next year’s competitive fixtures.
Coach McCarthy said the friendlies are part of his long-term plan to rebuild the team around a new generation of players.
“We need to see how our young talents perform on the big stage,” he told reporters in Nairobi. “Aldrine has shown quality at club level, and this is the right time to give him that exposure.”
Experience Meets Youth
The squad blends experience with emerging talent.
Alongside Kibet, Baron Ochieng of Zamalek also made the cut, while Ovella Ochieng — now at Nairobi United — returns to the team after a long spell out.
Goalkeepers Byrne Omondi (Gor Mahia) and Brian Bwire (Polokwane City) will share duties between the posts. The defence includes Vincent Harper, Baron Ochieng, and Sylvester Owino.
Midfielders Alpha Onyango and Timothy Ouma join Kibet to anchor the team, while the attack features Jonah Ayunga and Ovella Ochieng.
Football analysts have praised McCarthy’s decision to mix youth with experience, saying it’s a necessary step toward building a stronger team for future competitions.
“Kibet’s inclusion signals a change of direction,” said football commentator Alex Mwakio. “Kenya has to trust its young talent if we want to compete consistently at continental level.”
Building Toward a Brighter Future
Kenya has endured a difficult few years on the international stage, missing out on several key tournaments. McCarthy’s tenure has focused on rebuilding confidence and consistency in the squad.
These Turkey friendlies will offer a chance to test new combinations, strengthen teamwork, and restore the winning spirit that once defined the Harambee Stars.
For Kibet, the call-up marks a new beginning — one that could define his career.
