A Nairobi traffic court has fined the driver of Kibra Member of Parliament Peter Orero KSh100,000 after he was caught on camera dangerously overtaking and obstructing traffic along Oloitoktok Road.
The driver, identified as George Oduor, appeared before the Milimani Traffic Court on Monday, where he pleaded guilty to the charges of dangerous driving and obstruction.
The case drew public attention last week after a viral video showed a vehicle believed to belong to the MP cutting across lanes and blocking other motorists, sparking widespread criticism online.
According to the prosecution, the incident occurred on October 9 in Nairobi, when Oduor overtook a line of vehicles and stopped in a manner that obstructed the flow of traffic.
When the charges were read out, Oduor admitted to the offence and asked the court for leniency, saying he had been in a rush to take someone to the airport.
“I am sorry, Your Honour. I was in a hurry to drop someone at the airport and I will not repeat the offence,” he told the court.
The presiding magistrate acknowledged his apology but noted that the law sets a clear penalty for such conduct.
“I have considered your mitigation, but the law provides a fine of KSh100,000. I will therefore impose the maximum penalty,” the magistrate ruled.
Neither MP Orero nor his office has commented publicly on the case.
