Kenyans are in for a celestial treat on Tuesday morning as a stunning supermoon lights up the dawn sky — appearing brighter and larger than usual.
Astronomers say the phenomenon will reach its peak around 6:47 a.m. East Africa Time, but the best time to catch it will be just before sunrise. In Nairobi, the moon is expected to set at about 5:25 a.m., offering a perfect window for early risers.
A supermoon occurs when the full moon coincides with the point in its orbit closest to Earth, known as the perigee. Because of this proximity, the moon appears significantly larger and more luminous.
“This one’s special — it’s the Hunter’s Moon, the first supermoon of 2025,” read a Facebook post circulating among astronomy enthusiasts. “Get ready for a magical night sky!”
Historically, the Hunter’s Moon was named by Native American tribes, marking the season when hunters would gather food for the long winter ahead.
Scientists say such celestial events are not just beautiful but also a reminder of the rhythms of nature that continue quietly above our busy lives.
If you’re in Kenya, set your alarm early, step outside, and look up — tomorrow morning’s sky promises a rare, glowing spectacle worth losing a bit of sleep for.
