Kenyan singer Bahati found himself trending once again — but not for a new song. A simple wedding anniversary post to his wife, Diana Marua, turned into a full-blown online debate after she publicly questioned the timeline of their marriage.
On Sunday, Bahati shared a romantic video of the couple, captioning it:
“Today marks nine years since we got married. Happy 9th anniversary to the Bahatis. Nine gifts loading to celebrate this. Name a gift that should not miss.”
The post seemed harmless – until Diana jumped into the comments section. Her brief but pointed reply, laced with disbelief, read:
“Since we got married???? SMH 😳😳”
Her reaction immediately lit up social media. Fans flooded the comments, debating how long the two had actually been married. Some sided with Bahati, suggesting he may have been counting from when their relationship began. Others pointed out that the couple’s traditional wedding took place in 2023, after nearly seven years of dating.
Fans Weigh In

By midday, the post had gone viral. “It’s giving maths problems,” one user joked on X (formerly Twitter). Another wrote, “We love Bahati, but the man’s calendar is clearly custom-made.”
Still, some fans defended the singer, saying anniversaries are personal and can be counted from any meaningful milestone.
A Pattern of Online Storms
This isn’t the first time Bahati and Diana’s relationship has been the talk of the internet. Known for their openness online, the couple has built a loyal fan base by sharing nearly every aspect of their lives — from parenting moments to public disagreements.
In recent months, Bahati has been no stranger to controversy. His explicit track “Seti”, which marked a bold new musical direction, drew criticism from fans — and distance from his wife.
In a public statement, Diana clarified she wouldn’t associate her brand with “explicit music,” citing her values and commitments to corporate partners. Critics claimed it was all part of a publicity stunt to boost views, though neither Bahati nor Diana confirmed this.
Earlier this year, Bahati was also criticised after posting a private message from the late Gengetone artist Shalkido, which he shared as a tribute following the young artist’s death. Many saw it as insensitive and accused Bahati of using the tragedy for attention.
“Must it always be about you, Bahati? Please be serious for once,” one follower commented at the time.
Despite the constant drama, Bahati continues to command attention online. His music releases, social media posts, and even family updates often trend within minutes. Whether adored or criticised, he remains one of Kenya’s most talked-about entertainers.
