The Harambee Stars have set their sights firmly on victory as they prepare to face Burundi in a crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier on Thursday, October 9, in Bujumbura.
Kenya’s national team camp is buzzing with optimism as captain Michael Olunga, the towering forward who has led the squad from the front, believes his teammates are ready to deliver.
“Most of the players have already arrived. We are positive and each of the players is ready for the assignment ahead,” Olunga told reporters in Nairobi before the team’s departure.
A Battle with Stakes
For head coach Benni McCarthy, this is more than just another fixture. The South African tactician, who has brought a new energy and discipline to the squad, insists that the Stars are travelling to Bujumbura for one purpose only—three points.
“It is an opportunity for us to collect maximum points; we know what’s at stake as we go into the lion’s den,” McCarthy said during the team’s final training session.
The coach noted that his technical team had carefully reviewed Kenya’s previous meeting with Burundi, making tactical tweaks aimed at improving their play in key areas.
“We respect our opponents, but this doesn’t mean we will hold back. We hope our opponents keep the same mindset,”noted McCarthy.
Tactical Fine-Tuning and New Faces
McCarthy confirmed that nearly the full squad is now in camp, including new call-up Vincent Harper, whose inclusion has excited fans eager to see what the England-based full-back can bring.
While a few players have picked up minor knocks, the coach expressed confidence that his entire team will be fit by match day.
“We’ve had a few light concerns, but the medical team has been on top of it. Everyone should be ready,” McCarthy added.
Eyes on the Prize
Kenya will be hoping to build on their promising recent performances and make a statement in Bujumbura. A win could see them climb up the qualification table despite losing out on World Cup 2026 qualification.
