Governors Set to Elect New Leadership as Ruto Rolls Out Youth Fund Nationwide

Ann

The Council of Governors will hold a crucial election in Nairobi on Monday to choose its next leadership team, marking a significant moment in the politics of Kenya’s devolved system.

The vote, taking place at the council’s offices in Westlands, will begin at 9 a.m. and decide who takes over as Chairperson, Vice Chairperson, Chief Whip, and several committee heads. The results are expected to be announced at midday, followed by a media briefing on key resolutions.

The election is being conducted under the Intergovernmental Relations Act of 2012, which guides coordination between county and national governments. With devolution now over a decade old, the new leadership will face the ongoing challenge of balancing fiscal independence with accountability to the national administration.

Political watchers say the outcome could shape county–state relations for the next two years, especially on issues of funding, healthcare, and the equitable sharing of resources.

Ruto Dispatches Principal Secretaries for Youth Fund Launch

In a separate development, President William Ruto has deployed all his Principal Secretaries to their home counties to oversee the rollout of the National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (Nyota) programme — a Sh5 billion initiative designed to empower young entrepreneurs.

Each PS will lead launch events across Kenya starting Monday morning, joined by local leaders and government officials.

According to government figures, the World Bank–backed scheme will offer grants of Sh50,000 each to 70 young people in every one of Kenya’s 1,450 wards, alongside business training and mentorship.

“This is about creating real opportunities at the grassroots,” a senior official involved in the rollout said. “We want young people to have both the capital and the skills to succeed.”

The Nyota programme is part of Ruto’s broader plan to address youth unemployment, a persistent challenge that continues to test his administration’s economic agenda.

Kindiki Heads to Garissa After Market Fire

Meanwhile, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki is expected in Garissa Town to preside over a resource mobilisation event for small-scale traders affected by the recent Sug-Mugdi Market Fire, which destroyed property of unknown value.

The market, a vital hub for the region’s economy, was razed last week, leaving hundreds of traders counting losses. Kindiki will be joined by local leaders in efforts to raise funds and coordinate recovery efforts.

Kenya Power to Unveil New Digital Services

In Nairobi, Kenya Power will launch three digital customer service platforms at its Stima Plaza headquarters in Ngara.

The utility firm says the new systems aim to simplify bill payments, streamline service requests, and improve communication between customers and the company.

“These platforms are meant to make customer engagement faster and more transparent,” Kenya Power said in a statement. A live demonstration of the new services will follow the launch.
