Ex-CJ Maraga Settles on UGM Party for 2027 Showdown with Ruto

Former Chief Justice David Maraga has announced his entry into the United Green Movement (UGM), describing the party as one of the few in the country whose values align with his own.

“I am honoured to join the United Green Movement, one of the few political parties whose ideology and values align with my Ukatiba philosophy,” he said in a statement on Thursday.

The Ukatiba movement, which he has long championed, places emphasis on constitutionalism, civic responsibility, and people-driven governance. He said the partnership with UGM would provide a stronger platform to advance these principles.

With the alliance sealed, the politician said the immediate focus would be on preparing for upcoming by-elections. “We now embark on campaigning for our candidates for the by-elections, advocating for registration of voters, including those in the diaspora, and running a value-based People’s Campaign,” he added.

The United Green Movement, founded in 2019, has positioned itself as a progressive alternative in Kenya’s crowded political field. It has sought to distinguish itself from larger, ethnically anchored parties by emphasising environmental sustainability, social justice, and accountability.

Analysts note that while smaller parties such as UGM face steep hurdles in mobilising resources and attracting national attention, they play a growing role in shaping Kenya’s political conversation.

The politician’s decision to join UGM signals not only a personal alignment with its platform but also a strategic bet that values-driven politics can gain traction in a climate often dominated by personality-driven alliances.

Whether this “People’s Campaign” resonates with voters remains to be seen. But for now, UGM has gained a new champion determined to expand its reach.
