When Bill Gates turns 70 later this month, the celebration will go far beyond cake and candles. The event, set for October 28, 2025, will serve as a global call to action—honouring one man’s lifetime of service while inspiring others to continue his mission.
Among those leading that charge is Catherine Kamau, one of Africa’s most beloved entertainers and advocates. Known across the continent for her authenticity and grace, Kamau—often affectionately called Kate Actress—has been appointed Goodwill Ambassador for the celebration.
“It’s not just about marking a milestone,” she said in a statement. “It’s about celebrating a legacy of giving and inviting others to play their part.”
A Global Campaign for Change
The event is being organised by a coalition of world leaders, innovators, and philanthropists. Together, they aim to highlight Gates’ vast contributions to global health, education, and technology—while mobilising partners to sustain and expand that work.
As Goodwill Ambassador, Kamau will spearhead efforts to bring African voices to the global campaign. She will onboard regional changemakers and collaborate with the official campaign anthem artist to create a song symbolising shared values of innovation, compassion, and service.
She will also lead storytelling efforts leading up to the Monthly Humanitarian Legacy Festivals launching in February 2026, and the broader Future of Humanity Initiative, which will continue Gates’ humanitarian vision.
The Future of Humanity
The Future of Humanity Initiative has already drawn pledges exceeding $3 billion from global philanthropists. It will be formally unveiled at the birthday event, introducing founding changemakers inspired by Gates’ work.
The initiative’s mission reflects Gates’ long-held dream: that every child, regardless of birthplace, has food to eat, access to healthcare, and the chance to go to school.
A series of digital activations will precede the celebration, including the #BillGatesAt70 and #CelebrateImpact campaigns, where fans and changemakers can share messages and nominate community heroes across Africa.
Catherine’s Own Legacy
Kamau’s appointment underscores her growing influence beyond film and television. Through her Auntie Kate Foundation, she advocates for women’s health and education, empowering vulnerable women and girls across Kenya and beyond.
“Change begins when we tell our stories and take action in our own communities,” she once told The Nation in Nairobi.
From her breakout role in Mother-in-Law to acclaimed performances in Nafsi and Disconnect on Netflix, Kamau has become a cultural icon and a trusted voice in entertainment and advocacy alike.
Independent but Inspired
Organisers emphasise that the celebration and its humanitarian projects are independent and not affiliated with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Instead, they are meant to honour Gates’ impact and inspire a new generation of changemakers.
Kamau’s participation gives the global campaign a distinctly African heartbeat—a reminder that the work of building a fairer world is a shared responsibility.
