Amber Ray Hits Back at Critics Over Stand on Controversial Cybercrime Amendment Bill

Amber Ray Hits Back at Critics Over Stand on Controversial Cybercrime Amendment Bill

Kenyan socialite and media personality Amber Ray has defended her remarks supporting the controversial Cybercrime Amendment Bill, clarifying that her views stemmed purely from personal conviction and not political influence.

Amber Ray, who had earlier posted on her Instagram stories expressing support for the bill, faced backlash from netizens who accused her of siding with the President William Ruto’s government against online freedom of expression.

However, she has since come out to clarify that her statement was “simply an opinion” based on her own reflections on the misuse of social media platforms.

“For once, I genuinely support a decision by the government — the passing of the Cybercrime Amendment Bill,” Amber wrote.

The influencer explained that her stance was motivated by the rising cases of online bullying and defamation, noting that while freedom of speech is a right, it should not be a license for disrespect or cruelty.

“In a world where digital platforms have become our second homes, where words travel faster than action, it’s more important than ever to remember that freedom of speech should never be an excuse for cruelty, defamation, or disrespect,” she stated.

Amber added that social media has created “an illusion of power without consequence,” reminding her followers that there are real people behind the screens who are affected by hateful or false online attacks.

Freedom Is Good But Needs Control – Amber Ray

In a video response addressing the online criticism, Amber reiterated that her statement was not sponsored and that she has no ties with the government.

“You know, people love freedom. Freedom is good, but I still feel it’s important to have a little control,” she said.

“Those who are calling me, don’t call me. Just go, find the bill, go through it, and then you’ll tell me what it is. Don’t call me because you love freedom — go read it and put yourself in the shoes of people who are bullied online.”

She emphasized that everyone is entitled to their own opinion, urging critics to engage with facts rather than outrage.

“That was my opinion. I don’t know why people are calling me. If you don’t like it, you can air your opinion without being offended or anything. Just speak up.”

Amber’s clarification comes amid heated national debate over the Cybercrime Amendment Bill, which was signed by President Ruto in the coure of last week.

Critics argue that it could stifle online expression, while supporters claim it will curb the rise in digital harassment, defamation, and misinformation.
