Excitement filled the air across the country this morning as more than 996,000 students began their Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams. This marks a major milestone in their academic journey full of hard work and learning.

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) confirmed that all preparations had been completed following nationwide rehearsals held on Friday. Officials have assured the public of a “transparent and secure process,” vowing to uphold the integrity of one of the country’s most watched national exercise.

David Njengere who is the KNEC Chief Executive Officer, said 996,078 candidates are sitting the KCSE this year, with French, German, Arabic, and Kenyan Sign Language orals taking the lead today. Mr Njengere added that Practical exams will follow from Wednesday through Friday, 31 October.

“This year we have enhanced logistical capacity to ensure fairness and smooth administration we have also increased the number of examination storage containers from 617 last year to 642. This will help us reach all centres on time and strengthen material security,” said Njengere.

This year’s KCSE exams come at a time of enhancing education reforms. According to KNEC, another 1,298,089 pupils are preparing for the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) which starts next week. Further 1,130,669 will sit the Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA).

Education CS Julius Ogamba has warned that the government will not tolerate any form of malpractice.

“Those caught cheating or aiding irregularities will face legal consequence. Our children deserve a fair system that rewards honesty and effort,” he said.

As the first answer sheets are marked by this year’s candidates, the nation watches — hopeful that this year’s KCSE will be remembered not for controversy, but for integrity and success.
