A six-year-old boy died on Monday after a fire swept through his family’s home in Bukura village, Lurambi Constituency. Police have opened an investigation into the cause of the blaze.
According to neighbours, the child’s mother, a trader at Bukura market, had left him locked inside the house while she went to work. She was later told that flames had engulfed the home. By the time residents reached the scene, it was too late to save him.
“We saw smoke and rushed to help, but the fire spread quickly,” said local resident Peter Lime. “It was heartbreaking.”
The boy’s body was later taken to the Kakamega County Referral Hospital mortuary. A post-mortem is expected to determine the exact cause of death.
Authorities have not yet confirmed how the fire started. Police said investigations were ongoing and urged residents to report any information that could shed light on the incident.
The tragedy has left the community in mourning and raised questions about child safety in rural households, where parents often juggle market work and childcare with limited support.
