Ruto to Commission Mombasa Commuter Rail Service Today

launch

Kenya Railways will today officially launch the Mombasa Commuter Rail Service in a ceremony to be presided over by President William Ruto.

The service, seen as a key step in improving urban mobility at the Coast, will connect the Mombasa Terminus in Miritini with the city’s central business district.

Officials say the project is designed to offer safe, reliable and affordable transport for thousands of daily commuters. The trains are expected to ease congestion on the city’s busy roads and provide an alternative to matatus and bodabodas, which dominate public transport.

Kenya Railways has refurbished locomotives and passenger coaches for the route and plans to run services during peak hours to accommodate workers, students and traders.

The initiative is also expected to support economic growth in Mombasa, a city whose port is central to trade across East Africa.
