Ruto Challenges Trump Over Climate Change

NAIROBI — President William Ruto has pushed back against Donald Trump’s claim that climate change is a “con job,” telling world leaders that science cannot be wished away.

The Kenyan leader spoke on France 24 after the former U.S. president used a fiery address to the United Nations General Assembly in New York to pour scorn on decades of climate policy.

In his hour-long speech, Mr Trump told more than 150 heads of state that climate change was “the greatest con job ever perpetrated on the world.” He dismissed scientists as “stupid people” with “evil intentions” and accused the UN of exaggerating risks for political gain.

“They said global warming will kill the world, but then it started getting cooler,” Mr Trump declared. “So now they just call it climate change. That way, they can’t miss.”

Mr Ruto, who has made climate diplomacy a hallmark of his presidency, rejected those arguments outright. “I don’t think anybody, however influential, powerful or great, can change the facts,” he said. “Floods, wildfires, and droughts are ravaging continents. That’s a reality you can’t wish away. Science, facts are stubborn. The train left the station. Climate change is real. Climate action is necessary.”

The Kenyan leader has repeatedly urged wealthier nations to invest in green projects across Africa, framing the crisis as an opportunity as well as a threat. “It’s no longer about charity,” he said. “Climate action is turning into investment. There are opportunities now even as we focus on tackling the crisis. I am confident about the future.”

Beyond climate, Mr Ruto used his platform to press for sweeping reforms at the United Nations. He warned that the institution risked losing relevance unless it addressed what he called its outdated structures. “Unless the UN is reformed, its own survival is at stake,” he said. “Decision-making must be representative, democratic, and alive to the challenges of today. That’s why Africa continues to push for reform of the Security Council and the international financial system.”

While Mr Trump remains sceptical, many leaders in New York spoke of the urgency of climate action. Mr Ruto suggested that, despite differences in tone, there was growing consensus on the need to reshape global governance. “The debate is no longer remote,” he said. “Looking at the statements in this summit, it’s clear that everybody — from President Trump to President Macron to leaders from Africa — is united in one thing. We need to reform the UN and its structure.”
