A police commander arrested for attending a high-level security forum while drunk has been released, though disciplinary proceedings are expected to follow.
The officer, Daniel Muchiri, who heads Ntimaru Police Station, was detained on Thursday after showing up intoxicated at the Jukwaa la Usalama forum in Migori, chaired by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen.
According to a police report, Mr Muchiri was subjected to a breathalyser test before being taken to Migori Referral Hospital for further medical checks.
Suna East Sub-County Police Commander Samwel Boit confirmed the arrest. He said Mr Muchiri was booked at Suna East Police Station but released hours later pending investigations.
“Appropriate disciplinary measures will be taken once the probe is concluded,” Mr Boit told reporters.
The incident drew public attention as the Jukwaa la Usalama forums, spearheaded by Mr Murkomen, are intended to strengthen community engagement on matters of security. Officials have yet to clarify whether the Interior Ministry will weigh in on the officer’s case.
