Kenya’s weather agency has warned residents in Nairobi and other regions to prepare for rainfall this week, even as much of the country remains under clear skies.
In its latest forecast covering 16 to 22 September, the Kenya Meteorological Department said showers are expected in sections of the Central Highlands — including the capital — as well as the Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, Western Kenya and the Coast.
“Some counties could experience heavy rainfall of more than 100 millimetres,” the agency noted, highlighting Nyeri, Nyandarua, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Kwale and Kilifi among the areas most at risk.
The announcement comes as many parts of the country have endured weeks of dry, hot weather. Daytime temperatures are projected to climb above 30 degrees Celsius in Coastal, North-eastern and North-western regions. By contrast, chilly nights dipping below 10 degrees are expected in the Central Highlands, Central Rift Valley and around Mt. Kilimanjaro.
The department also cautioned about strong winds, with southerly to south-easterly gusts likely to exceed 25 knots (around 13 metres per second) along the Coast and territorial waters. Similar conditions are forecast in the South-eastern lowlands and across parts of the North.
Weather shifts of this scale have often tested both rural farmers and urban commuters, with sudden downpours disrupting travel and threatening crops. Authorities urged Kenyans to stay alert, especially in regions prone to flooding.
