Four months after its launch, the Mukuru Affordable Housing Project has opened its second phase of registration targeting to provide proper homes to the informal settlers within South B, Imara Daima.
The exercise began on Monday in Nairobi South Ward and is targeting nearly 2,000 applicants, most of them from South B and Imara Daima.
Ruth Wekesa, an official from the Affordable Housing Board, said the focus was on residents already documented in earlier slum upgrading surveys.
“Today, we are dealing with those who underwent the enumeration process conducted by the Slum Upgrading Department,” she explained. “We are putting them into the system and helping them apply for studio units located at the New Mukuru Estate.”
Nairobi South Ward MCA Waithera Chege said the registration drive formed part of a broader government plan to extend affordable housing benefits to more residents.
“In this second phase, we are targeting at least 2,000 residents,” she said. “If you look at Mariguini, that project started way back, and as of today, we have managed to register over 600 people.”

For those taking part, the process has been both practical and symbolic. Applicants were required to present their KRA PIN, tax compliance certificate, and a six-month M-Pesa statement before registering for units.
“My application has gone through because the process has been simplified. I have registered for a bed-sitter,” said one resident, relieved at the prospect of moving to a dignified home.
Another beneficiary urged sceptics to take part. “My people, it is true, stop doubting this thing because I already have a house. I have already signed the agreement, so come and try your luck.”
The drive, which closes Tuesday, has also given residents the chance to raise concerns directly with housing officials. New applicants are set to be considered from Wednesday.
According to the Housing Board, the next phase, expected in January, will expand to include one- and two-bedroom units, further widening the scope of the government’s flagship housing programme.
