Kenya to Open National Parks for Free on World Tourism Day
Kenyans will be able to walk into national parks, reserves and sanctuaries without paying a shilling later this month, the government has announced.
Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano said entry fees would be waived on Saturday, 27 September, in celebration of United Nations World Tourism Day.
“This year’s theme, Tourism and Sustainable Transformation, reminds us of the power of tourism to bring positive change to communities, conservation and the economy,” Ms Miano said in a statement on Tuesday.
She described the move as a chance for citizens to reconnect with the country’s “breathtaking wildlife heritage” and to deepen a shared commitment to conservation.
“By opening the gates to these iconic spaces, we aim to foster a greater appreciation of Kenya’s rich biodiversity and inspire responsibility to protect it for generations to come,” she added.
World Tourism Day is marked each year on 27 September. Countries use the occasion to reflect on the role of travel in cultural exchange, economic growth and environmental stewardship.
Kenya, home to more than 20 national parks and reserves, relies heavily on wildlife tourism. According to government data, the sector contributes over 10 percent of the country’s GDP and supports hundreds of thousands of jobs.
Conservationists welcomed the gesture, noting that many Kenyans rarely visit the parks due to the high cost of entry. “This is more than just free entry. It is about creating a sense of ownership among citizens,” said a Nairobi-based wildlife researcher, speaking after the announcement.
Still, some industry insiders argue that such initiatives should be extended beyond a single day. They believe sustained access and public engagement are needed to strengthen domestic tourism and ensure locals see themselves as stakeholders in conservation.
Kenyans planning to take part are advised to check the Kenya Wildlife Service website and social media pages for guidelines on free entry. A toll-free number has also been provided for inquiries.
