Singer denies favouring lighter-skinned women following onstage dance with Kayla Nicole.
Chris Brown has deactivated his Instagram account after facing fresh accusations of colourism, a claim he strongly rejects.
The 35-year-old R&B star sparked debate earlier this week when he reposted footage of an onstage dance with media personality Kayla Nicole. The pair performed together during Brown’s Breezy Bowl XX tour stop in Los Angeles, where Nicole joined him on stage for his 2007 hit Take You Down.
Nicole, a former girlfriend of NFL player Travis Kelce, later shared her own take on the performance. Writing on Instagram, she said she did it for “the smart girls, the cool girls, the sexy girls, the fun girls—for all of us who are all of those things at once. And I overly did it for my brown girls, tthhhhaankya.”
Brown appeared to bristle at the comment. In a post to his Instagram Story, he wrote: “Miss me with that colourist rage baiting!!!” Hours later, he deactivated his account, adding: “Ima take a break from social media. Y’all done pissed me off long enough.”
The move comes after years of scrutiny about Brown’s dating history. Critics have accused him of preferring lighter-skinned or racially ambiguous women. Several of his former partners, including Karrueche Tran, Draya Michele and Ammika Harris, are biracial.
Allegations of colourism have followed Brown before. In 2023, Vibe reported claims from two darker-skinned Black women who said they were denied entry to his VIP section at a UK party. Brown denied any wrongdoing, reportedly telling the women to “stop reaching.”
Away from controversy, Brown is also a father of three. He shares an 11-year-old daughter, Royalty, with Nia Guzman, a 5-year-old son, Aeko, with Ammika Harris, and a 3-year-old daughter, Lovely, with Diamond Brown.
For now, it remains unclear when or if he will return to Instagram.
