A Chinese woman was robbed of 1.4 million shillings in broad daylight on Monday in Athi River, Machakos County, in what police say was a well-planned ambush.
The victim, identified as Xin Xin, had just withdrawn the money from a bank in Kitengela before boarding a cab headed for her workplace at Lukenya Park C, where she serves as a financial controller.
Police reports state that as the taxi reached the Shalom interchange along Namanga Road, a blue Mazda CX-5 blocked the vehicle. Two men in civilian clothes emerged, claiming to be police officers.
“They forced the driver out and took him to their vehicle before abandoning him near Crystal Rivers,” a report filed at Athi River Police Station read.
The cab driver, James Bosire Rosana, later managed to call Xin, only to discover that she had been robbed of the entire sum she was carrying. According to police, the cash had been withdrawn to cover company expenses.
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations have since taken over the case. No arrests had been made by press time.
The robbery comes just a day after a separate break-in was reported in nearby Syokimau estate, where four intruders allegedly ransacked a home, stealing laptops, a tablet, and personal documents. Police said the suspects, captured on CCTV, drove a black Land Cruiser Prado.
Both cases are under investigation as authorities warn of a surge in armed robberies in Nairobi’s satellite towns.
