Detectives in Bomet have arrested a man accused of ferrying cannabis valued at about Ksh.7 million, in what police described as a major drug seizure.
Officers from Sotik Police Station said they were on routine patrol along the Sotik–Kaplong Highway when they signalled a Toyota Isis to stop. The driver ignored the order, abandoned the car moments later and fled on foot.
“When the officers searched the vehicle, they found 350 kilograms of bhang packed in seven sacks,” the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said in a statement.
The incident triggered a manhunt. Using forensic leads, detectives tracked the suspect to Kibra in Nairobi, more than 200 kilometres away. He was arrested on Thursday and identified as Diab Asman Bhakit.
Police said Mr. Bhakit was taken back to Sotik Police Station for questioning and processing, and he is expected to face charges in court. The vehicle and the seized narcotics have been booked as evidence.
Authorities have stepped up crackdowns on drug trafficking in recent years, with highways in western Kenya seen as key transit routes. While police often announce large hauls, critics say the scale of trafficking points to networks that stretch far beyond the drivers caught on the roads.
