Five people were injured on Tuesday morning after a firearm accidentally discharged inside the Bungoma Law Courts during a criminal hearing, officials said.

The incident occurred at around 10:50 a.m. when the weapon of a Directorate of Criminal Investigations officer went off unexpectedly. The officer himself, a Kenya Prisons officer and three civilians were struck by the discharge.

“All five were rushed to Bungoma Referral Hospital, where they are undergoing treatment. They are all reported to be in stable condition. There were no serious injuries or fatalities,” Judiciary spokesperson Paul Ndemo said in a statement.

Mr Ndemo stressed that court officials and other members of the public remained safe. “All court officials as well as members of the public at the court are safe, and there is therefore no need for alarm,” he added.

The county security team visited the premises shortly after to assess the situation. The Judiciary said it would continue updating the public as investigations proceed.

The incident briefly disrupted court proceedings but calm was quickly restored.
