Tottenham Eyes Rodrygo as Heung-min Son’s Successor

With Heung-min Son no longer in their ranks, Tottenham Hotspur are searching for a new star to lead their attack from the left wing. Their top target? Brazilian forward Rodrygo Goes.

According to a report from AS, Spurs have already approached Real Madrid for permission to begin talks with the 24-year-old. While Rodrygo remains under contract at the Bernabéu until 2028, his future appears less certain. His minutes on the pitch have declined in recent months, particularly during the Club World Cup under new manager Xabi Alonso.

Sources close to the Spanish club suggest that increased competition within the squad has made things more difficult for Rodrygo. Rising stars like Franco Mastantuono and Gonzalo Garcia are both pushing for regular spots, making the Brazilian’s position less secure — especially as he continues to be played out of position to accommodate Vinícius Júnior on the left flank.

“Rodrygo still sees himself as a starting player, but his situation is changing,” a source familiar with the matter told Tribuna.com. “He wants to play on the left, but that’s Vinícius’ territory.”

Tottenham, now armed with financial flexibility following Son’s departure and a return to the Champions League, believe Rodrygo could be the ideal fit. The winger’s preferred position is on the left, and he has the pace, flair, and technical skill to thrive in England’s top flight.

Still, the deal is far from done.

Club chairman Daniel Levy is reportedly taking a cautious approach. The club’s immediate priority is securing João Palhinha from Bayern Munich — a midfielder who has long been admired by new head coach Thomas Frank. Only after that deal is finalised are Spurs expected to ramp up efforts to sign Rodrygo.

Meanwhile, Liverpool remain in the picture. Though their interest has cooled due to their pursuit of Newcastle striker Alexander Isak, Rodrygo is understood to be open to a move to Anfield. It’s unclear whether that door will re-open before the transfer window closes.

Real Madrid have not indicated a willingness to sell, and Rodrygo himself has yet to publicly express a desire to leave.
