KITUI, Kenya – A group of opposition senators has urged President William Ruto to abandon what they describe as persistent attempts to lure Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka into his government.
The five -Joe Nyotu of Murang’a, Enoch Wambua of Kitui, John Kinyua of Laikipia, John Methu of Nyandarua, and Karungo Thangwa of Kiambu – declared that Kalonzo would remain firmly in the opposition as the country heads towards the 2027 general election.
Speaking on Wednesday at Kyondoni Primary School in Kitui County, during Senator Wambua’s launch of his bid for the county’s governorship, the leaders said their united focus was to unseat President Ruto.
“Kalonzo is not joining your government at any one given time. And I speak with the blessing of the party leader,” Mr. Wambua told supporters, accusing the President of presiding over a government that has failed Kenyans. He alleged that the administration had “abducted and killed” young people – claims that have not been independently verified.
Senator Nyotu said the opposition’s unity was key to removing Mr. Ruto from office. “We don’t hate Ruto, but we hate his bad manners. If we unite, we shall take him home,” he told the crowd.
Senator Methu described the administration as “a disappointment to Kenyans,” adding that the electorate’s trust had been eroded.
The remarks come amid months of political speculation over whether Mr. Musyoka, a former vice president and a key figure in the Azimio la Umoja coalition, could be swayed to work with the Kenya Kwanza administration. President Ruto has not publicly confirmed any formal talks, but his allies have previously expressed openness to political realignments.
Kalonzo himself has maintained that he will remain in opposition, positioning himself as a central player in the coalition’s 2027 campaign strategy.
