In a show of national pride, Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku has asked government workers across Kenya to wear Harambee Stars jerseys at the office throughout August. The aim is to boost morale and show support for the national team as Kenya hosts the African Nations Championship (CHAN).

A Clear, Bold Directive

Speaking ahead of Kenya’s opening CHAN match against DR Congo at Kasarani Stadium, Ruku said: “Our country is privileged to host a continental occasion. To support our national team, I urge all public servants across the republic to wear the Harambee Stars jersey in offices throughout August.” He clarified that the policy applies to officials who can afford the kit and excludes the police and military, who typically observe different dress codes.

The Cabinet Secretary encouraged all public officials including Cabinet members, county staff, judicial officers and constitutional commissions to join in. He said: “We must be patriotic as Kenyans, united as one people, beyond tribe, politics or religion.”

Unity and Morale at the Fore

Ruku emphasized that the initiative is more than a costume change. It is intended to foster national solidarity, lift team spirit and create a sense of shared purpose within government ranks.

He urged people to continue wearing the jerseys through to the tournament finals: “This show of unity will lift the morale of our players… we must be patriotic as public servants.”

Kenya’s Strong Start: A Win to Celebrate

Kenya began its CHAN campaign in style with a 1–0 win over CHAN favorites DR Congo. The match, held at a packed Kasarani Stadium, saw Austin Odhiambo of Gor Mahia score the decisive goal just before half-time. Crowds and viewers across the country celebrated as Kenya claimed a memorable victory to kick off the tournament.

Wider Context

While many have welcomed the move as a patriotic gesture, questions remain about how inclusive the call is, particularly among those who cannot afford an official jersey. Ruku addressed this by stating that the directive applies only to those able to purchase the kit, limiting potential backlash.

Kenya is co‑hosting CHAN alongside Uganda and Tanzania.
