Nairobi—Police mounted a heavy presence at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on Thursday morning as former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua landed back from the United States.
Dozens of lorries carrying officers from the General Service Unit and anti-riot squads arrived at the airport in the early hours. Water cannons were stationed outside the main entrance. By 8:30 a.m., the atmosphere remained calm, with no incidents reported.
Traffic flowed smoothly in and out of the airport, though security checks were visibly tighter. Supporters of Mr Gachagua had begun to gather, some led by former Limuru MP Peter Mwathi, to welcome him home.
The government said the show of force was necessary. Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen warned earlier in the week that police were on high alert to prevent unrest.
“The security sector is prepared to deal with any insecurity issues,” Mr Murkomen said. “The last time he was around there were many goons in the name of protests. The National Police Service is ready to protect citizens and their property.”
He alleged that some groups were plotting to cause disruption, adding that anyone breaking the law would face consequences. “I wish Kenya remained peaceful as it has been for the last three to four weeks,” he said.
But Gachagua’s allies painted a different picture. Cleophas Malala, deputy leader of the Democratic Change Party, said the homecoming was meant to be peaceful. He announced plans for what he called “the mother of all processions” from JKIA to the Central Business District, ending with a rally at Kamkunji Grounds.
“We have notified police in advance and expect security to be provided,” Mr Malala said.
The day’s events could set the stage for another test between the state and Gachagua’s supporters. For now, the airport remains calm, though under the watchful eye of hundreds of officers.
