In what police are calling “a reckless and embarrassing stunt,” former Kakamega Senator and DCP deputy party leader Cleophas Malala could soon face criminal charges for landing a helicopter in the middle of a packed school stadium during halftime of a national secondary school football final in Mumias.
This wasn’t an emergency. It wasn’t protocol. And it definitely wasn’t cleared by aviation authorities. According to Western Region Police Commander Issa Muhamoud, Malala’s descent onto the Mumias Sports Complex was not just unauthorised it was illegal, disruptive, and dangerously irresponsible.
“He was probably seeking a political photo opportunity but caused a direct threat to the safety and dignity of Kenyans,” Muhamoud told reporters.
Thousands of students, teachers, government officials, and spectators had gathered to watch the match between Musingu High School and St. Joseph’s Kitale, when the chopper descended right onto the stadium unannounced, unapproved, and unwelcome.
Authorities say the sudden landing caused panic and confusion, risking a potential stampede and endangering minors. “The helicopter could have crashed, learners could have trampled on each other, and lives could have been lost,” said Muhamoud.
Now, both Malala and the pilot are under investigation and will be prosecuted for several offences, including:
- Endangering public safety
- Creating a public nuisance
- Trespassing
- Violating aviation laws
The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA), Ministry of Education, and Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have launched a joint probe. Preliminary findings suggest no clearance was given for the chopper to land at the school venue a direct violation of aviation regulations and the Basic Education Act.
“This was not an accident. It was a deliberate act of disregard for civil aviation rules, the law, and child safety,” said Muhamoud.
And if you’re thinking this is just political theatre think again. Authorities say this was a serious breach of public trust.
“We will not allow disorder, arrogance or impunity to endanger the lives of our future generation. The law will take its full course,” Muhamoud declared.
At a time when public figures are being urged to model accountability, Malala’s airborne entrance has sparked widespread backlash and may soon land him in more than just hot air.
