LONDON – With the new Premier League season fast approaching, Chelsea’s defensive flanks are shaping up as one of the club’s most intriguing storylines. A mix of youth, experience and international flair now defines the Blues’ fullback roster.
Club captain Reece James, 25, remains central to Chelsea’s defensive identity. Known for his strength, crossing ability and calm presence, James also carries the weight of leadership -a role he’s still growing into after an injury-ridden spell last season.
On the opposite side, Malo Gusto, the 22-year-old Frenchman, is fast proving why Chelsea invested early in his potential. His pace and attacking intent have drawn comparisons to some of Europe’s top wing-backs.
“We’ve got competition, but that only brings the best out of everyone,” Gusto said during a pre-season interview. “The goal is to win together.”
Also in the mix is Marc Cucurella, 27, whose form at Brighton earned him a high-profile move in 2022. The Spanish international struggled for consistency early on but has shown flashes of the tenacity and energy that made him a fan favourite in La Liga.
Perhaps the most surprising addition is Jorrel Hato, the 19-year-old Dutch prodigy. Fresh from Ajax, Hato is tipped to be one of Europe’s most promising defenders. Calm on the ball and tactically sharp beyond his years, he’s already being talked about as a long-term starter — though manager Enzo Maresca has called for patience.
“He’s a special talent, no doubt,” said Maresca after a recent training session. “But we’ll protect him and let him grow the right way.”
The blend of youth and experience gives Chelsea fresh depth – something they sorely lacked in previous seasons due to injuries and inconsistency. With European football back on the agenda, rotation will be key.
Chelsea fans will hope that this new generation of fullbacks – quick, technical, and hungry – can help the club close the gap at the top of the table.
