NAIROBI — The Catholic University of Eastern Africa rarely sees this much foot traffic. But over three days last week, its quiet lawns were turned into a bustling marketplace of ideas, goods and deals.

The Africa Trade Expo 2025, organised by Kenya’s Dawoodi Bohra community, drew 6,625 visitors and 225 exhibitors from around the globe. The goal was simple: connect East Africa’s business potential with the world.

“It’s about giving entrepreneurs, big and small, a stage to dream bigger,” said Shabbir Nomani, the community’s chairman in Nairobi. “Faith and business go hand in hand for us. We value fair dealing and collective progress.”

A Showcase of Sectors

The event, held from 8 to 10 August, covered eight industries — from manufacturing and green energy to healthcare and tourism. The largest turnout came from information technology and industrial solutions, with 57 exhibitors. Tourism and hospitality followed with 36, and real estate and construction drew 35.

Organisers said 50 of the businesses were small or medium-sized enterprises. For Moiz Hassanali, the event’s project coordinator, that was a sign of the region’s entrepreneurial spirit. “East Africa is young, ambitious and on the rise,” he said. “We wanted to inspire people to see what’s possible here.”

Economic Tailwinds

Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania are among Africa’s fastest-growing economies. Rising GDP, a growing middle class and better regional transport links have made the bloc an attractive hub for trade. The African Continental Free Trade Area has further opened markets, giving businesses in the region easier access to more than 400 million consumers.

The Bohra community has long been part of that growth. Its members have built businesses across manufacturing, real estate, technology and trade services — ventures that create jobs and skills, while fuelling intra-African trade.

Deals and Connections

For many exhibitors, the Expo was more than a display space. It was a chance to meet potential partners face to face. “We’ve spoken to investors, buyers and fellow entrepreneurs all in one place,” said Murtaza Ebrahimjee, whose firm, Ebrahimjee and Mutai Advisory, focuses on manufacturing solutions. “This kind of access is rare.”

Alongside product showcases, the programme included networking sessions, panel discussions and matchmaking services tailored to connect sellers with qualified buyers.

The organisers say the event will return next year, aiming to draw even more international players into East Africa’s economic conversation.
