National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula has affirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening small and medium enterprises (SMEs), with a specific focus on those owned by youth and women. Speaking at Nyamache Grounds in Bobasi Constituency, Kisii County, Wetangula addressed a local gathering during a women empowerment event. He emphasized the need to support grassroots economic efforts through structured community groups aimed at building financial independence.

“We’re committed to supporting community-based groups that drive economic self-reliance,” Speaker Wetangula said. “These initiatives are key to unlocking the potential of youth and women across the country.” Wetangula pointed to Kisii’s agricultural strength as a foundation for enterprise growth, citing the region’s rich soil and consistent rainfall. He noted that local farmers produce high-demand crops like bananas, avocados, and sugarcane, which offer viable paths for business development.

“This region has fertile land and dedicated farmers. What we need is to connect that potential with structured support,” he added. Wetangula was joined by a group of national and local leaders during the event. Their shared message focused on broadening access to economic opportunities through policy-driven empowerment efforts. The leaders expressed the need to equip grassroots enterprises with tools that encourage sustainability and long-term growth.

The event in Bobasi marks part of an ongoing national effort to improve livelihoods through small-scale enterprise development. It also follows increased public calls for government accountability in addressing youth unemployment and the economic marginalization of women.

The government has not announced any new funding commitments tied to the program. However, Wetangula’s remarks reflect a growing political shift toward local development as a driver of national stability.

The Speaker called on community leaders to ensure that youth and women’s groups remain active and organized, saying, “When these groups function well, they create real impact. That’s where our future lies.”
