WAFCON 2024: Senegal, Morocco Eye Quarterfinals in Crucial Group A Clashes

Morocco — Group A of the 2024 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations enters a decisive phase tonight as Senegal takes on Zambia, followed by hosts Morocco facing DR Congo in two must-win games that will determine who stays in the tournament.

Senegal leads the group with 3 points after a dominant 4-0 win over DR Congo in their opening match. The team displayed strong attacking intent and controlled play across both halves. A win tonight would guarantee their place in the quarterfinals and eliminate DR Congo, who sits at the bottom of the table.

Zambia, currently with one point, salvaged a 2-2 draw against Morocco in a tightly contested opener. Star striker Barbra Banda scored and assisted, keeping Zambia in contention. The Copper Queens need a win against Senegal to avoid a must-win scenario in their final group game.

Tonight’s fixture also rekindles their 2022 quarterfinal clash, where Zambia knocked out Senegal on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

In the second match, Morocco will play under pressure to claim their first win after dropping two points to Zambia. The Atlas Lionesses, runners-up in the 2022 edition, are under new leadership with coach Jorge Vilda. They will rely on home support and experience to overcome DR Congo.

Morocco’s key attackers will aim to break down a shaky DR Congo defense that conceded four goals in the opening match. DR Congo trails the group with zero points and a -4 goal difference. A loss tonight would effectively end their campaign.

A win for Morocco would place them in strong contention for the knockout stage, depending on results from the final round of group matches.

Current Group A Standings:

  • Senegal: 3 points, +4 goal difference
  • Morocco: 1 point, 0 goal difference
  • Zambia: 1 point, 0 goal difference
  • DR Congo: 0 points, -4 goal difference

With only two matchdays remaining, every point counts.

Tonight’s Fixtures – Wednesday, July 9, 2025:

  • Zambia vs Senegal – 7:00 PM
  • Morocco vs DR Congo – 10:00 PM

The results of these fixtures will shape the path to the quarterfinals and could spell the end of the road for at least one side by night’s end.
