NAIROBI – Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has joined leaders across the continent in mourning the death of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a principled statesman who upheld integrity and championed African unity.
In a statement issued Monday, Kenyatta expressed deep sorrow at Buhari’s passing and extended condolences to Nigeria’s government, citizens, and Buhari’s family.
“President Buhari was a symbol of resilience and integrity,” Former President Uhuru Kenyatta said. “He led with a steady hand, placed the interests of Nigeria and the continent above self, and upheld the values of public service with humility.”
Buhari, who served two terms as Nigeria’s president, died over the weekend. His tenure was marked by strong anti-corruption campaigns, regional diplomacy, and efforts to strengthen internal security and economic governance.

Former president Uhuru Kenyatta credited Buhari with reshaping Africa’s governance priorities and reinforcing cooperation among African states. He highlighted Buhari’s role in regional peacebuilding and his unwavering stance against graft.
“His fight against corruption and his commitment to African solutions for African problems earned him admiration beyond Nigeria,” Kenyatta stated. “He believed in strengthening the continent’s voice on the world stage and worked tirelessly toward that vision.”

Recalling Buhari’s state visit to Kenya during his administration, Kenyatta spoke of their personal bond and shared commitment to advancing African progress.

“We held extensive discussions about the continent’s future. Those conversations reflected a deep sense of responsibility and unity of purpose,” he said.
Former President Uhuru Kenyatta described Buhari as a leader who remained calm under pressure and guided Nigeria through complex political and economic transitions. He credited Buhari’s involvement in the African Union with driving meaningful dialogue on security, trade, and democratic values.
“I have lost not only a friend but a fellow patriot committed to a peaceful and united Africa,” Kenyatta added. “My prayers are with the people of Nigeria and with his family during this difficult time.”
