KAMPALA — Uganda has unveiled a 29-man provisional squad for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), as the host nation steps up preparations for the continental tournament set to run from August 2 to 30.

Cranes co-head coaches Morley Byekwaso and Fred Muhumuza announced the squad following a closed-door session at Prisons Ground in Luzira. The list will be trimmed to 23 players ahead of the tournament’s final registration deadline.

Former national team captain Denis Onyango has temporarily joined the technical bench to guide the goalkeepers during camp, bringing experience and mentorship to the squad.
Among the notable omissions is Vipers SC captain Milton Karisa, who remains sidelined due to injury. Other players left out include Paul Mucureezi, Enock Walusimbi, Emmanuel Wasswa, and David Owori.
Uganda, making its seventh appearance at CHAN, will compete in Group C alongside Algeria, Guinea, Niger, and South Africa. The Cranes begin their campaign against Algeria on August 4 at Namboole Stadium in Kampala.

Uganda’s football authorities have expressed confidence in the squad’s readiness and the ongoing training environment. With home advantage and a deep pool of local talent, the Cranes will aim to make a strong statement when they take the pitch next month.
