Nairobi – The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has announced a nationwide retooling program for teachers set to instruct Grades 10 through 12 under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC). The training will run from July 28 to August 15, 2025, at selected venues in every county.
An internal memo from TSC to regional and county directors confirmed the face-to-face training will involve teachers from regular secondary schools, Special Needs Education (SNE) institutions, and vocational training centers. Participants will be selected based on staffing levels in each school.
“The target participants for retooling are senior school teachers, both regular and SNEs, who will handle age-based and stage-based learners across the pathways offered in the CBE curriculum,” the memo stated.
The CBC senior school rollout introduces three learning pathways Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), Social Sciences, and Arts and Sports Science. According to TSC, teachers will be trained in 55 subjects aligned with these pathways.
This effort is part of the government’s preparation to transition current Grade 9 learners into senior school in January 2026. Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba announced that KSh980 million had been allocated for the retooling initiative.
“The government is fully committed to ensuring a smooth shift to senior school and will support teachers with the resources needed to guide learners effectively,” Ogamba said last month.
Under the CBC guidelines, students will choose a total of 12 schools, including 9 boarding and 3 day schools, based on subject combinations and location preferences.
The TSC’s retooling move follows increased focus on ensuring that teachers are well-prepared to meet the learning demands of the new system. The CBC, first introduced in 2017, emphasizes practical skills, learner strengths, and personalized education over exam-based evaluations.
As the clock ticks toward the 2026 rollout, education stakeholders continue to monitor how schools and instructors are adapting to the sweeping changes. TSC has not yet released the full list of training venues, but school heads are expected to receive guidance before the end of July.
