Trump Confirms Attendance at Club World Cup Final as FIFA Deepens U.S. Ties

President Donald Trump will attend the FIFA Club World Cup final on Sunday at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. The announcement follows FIFA’s decision to open a new office in Trump Tower, New York, signaling an effort to deepen ties with the U.S. government ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

The final will feature Chelsea against either Paris Saint-Germain or Real Madrid. This match will be the climax of the newly expanded Club World Cup, hosted for the first time by the United States. The same stadium is also set to stage the 2026 World Cup final.

Trump currently chairs a White House taskforce that oversees preparation for both the Club World Cup and next year’s global tournament. His increased involvement in major sporting events comes during a term marked by high-profile appearances. He attended this year’s Super Bowl and has confirmed that the White House will host a UFC event in 2026.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino praised the U.S. government’s support for the tournaments. “We have received such a big support from the government and from the president with the White House taskforce for the FIFA Club World Cup and for the FIFA World Cup next year,” Infantino said.

Infantino emphasized the importance of a U.S. base. “FIFA is a global organization, and to be global you have to be local. We have to be in New York,” he said. FIFA also maintains an office in Miami, further strengthening its presence in the U.S.

FIFA’s announcement comes at a time when immigration policy remains a focal issue in Trump’s administration. Though Infantino reassured international fans they would be welcomed to the United States, Trump is reportedly considering additional travel restrictions that could expand the current ban to citizens of up to 36 countries.

Despite the policy backdrop, Trump has been increasingly visible in the sports arena. He became the first sitting U.S. president to attend a Super Bowl and recently confirmed that Washington D.C. will host the 2027 NFL Draft. Trump has also appeared at multiple UFC events, including a June fight card in New Jersey.

The United States, along with Canada and Mexico, will co-host the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The MetLife Stadium final is expected to draw a global audience and mark a major milestone in the buildup to the tournament.

FIFA’s expanded presence in New York, anchored in a property bearing the Trump name, signals a growing collaboration between global football’s governing body and the current U.S. administration. Sunday’s final will mark both a sporting showdown and a significant political appearance ahead of a defining year in world football.
