A popular TikToker has been arrested in Nairobi for allegedly posting a video inciting violence against police officers and their families. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) says the suspect, Godfrey Mwasiaga, who goes by the name Kakan Maiyo, was taken into custody after a viral clip sparked outrage online.

DCI officers tracked Mr Mwasiaga to a modest office tucked inside Kimathi House in Nairobi’s city centre. According to the authorities, he was operating under a little-known business name: LetaPeleka Logistics.

The suspect is currently in police custody and is expected to be arraigned soon.

In a statement released on Wednesday evening, the DCI said: “The suspect behind a viral video inciting violence against police officers and their families has been arrested.”

The agency did not provide further details on the contents of the video or the exact charges Mr Mwasiaga will face. However, the brief clip -widely circulated on TikTok and WhatsApp – is said to have contained strong language calling for attacks against law enforcement.

Police said they acted swiftly due to the seriousness of the threats.

Online, reactions have been divided. Some users supported the arrest, calling for accountability in digital spaces. Others, however, raised concerns about freedom of expression and how it is applied, particularly on social media platforms where satire and activism often blur.

“We must protect police officers, yes – but we also need to be cautious not to criminalise dissent,” said James Wanjala, a digital rights advocate based in Nairobi. “It’s important to know what exactly he said and in what context.”

As of Thursday morning, the controversial video had been taken down. TikTok has not yet responded to requests for comment.

The DCI urged the public to refrain from sharing content that could cause panic or incite violence, especially amid rising tensions in recent weeks between police and protesters across several counties.

Mr Mwasiaga has not issued a public statement since the arrest. It is unclear whether he has legal representation at this point.
