Police in Meru have arrested three men accused of looting and burning Magunas Supermarket during the Saba Saba protests.

The suspects identified as Ian Mugambi, Abdulatif Murithi, and Teddy Kaimenyi were captured on surveillance footage stealing goods before setting the supermarket ablaze. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) released evidence showing the trio breaking into the building and later fleeing the scene.

DCI officers said the suspects also broke into Selelite Supermarket and Seven Eleven Lounge during the same night of violence. A dark green motorcycle believed to have been used to transport stolen goods was recovered during the arrests.

The three are in police custody and will be charged once investigations conclude. Authorities are tracking additional suspects linked to the attacks.
“This was a coordinated criminal act carried out under the cover of protest,” an officer familiar with the investigation confirmed.
The Saba Saba demonstrations, held nationwide to demand reforms, turned violent in multiple towns. In Meru, businesses suffered heavy losses after attackers targeted stores, bars, and restaurants.
Magunas Supermarket, a key retail hub in the area, was gutted by fire. Security footage captured masked individuals vandalizing the property before flames engulfed the building. Emergency services arrived too late to save most of the stock.
Detectives are analyzing digital evidence to identify other participants. Police say all those involved will face charges ranging from burglary to arson and destruction of property.
The National Police Service has urged the public to share any information that could aid in further arrests.
The full extent of the damage is still being assessed. Owners of the affected businesses have appealed for government support in rebuilding.
