Prof. George Nyabuga recognised among the top five most educated individuals in Africa

NAIROBI — Prof. George Nyabuga has been ranked among the top five most educated individuals in Africa, drawing recognition from the Kenya Editors Guild for his outstanding contribution to journalism and higher education.

The Guild commended the professor in a public statement on July 21. “We’re proud to celebrate Dr. George Nyabuga,” the statement reiterated his achievements as a “media scholar, former journalist, and Kenya Editors Guild member” whose work continues to shape the continent’s media landscape.

Prof George Nyabuga holds a PhD in Media, Politics, and History from Coventry University in the United Kingdom. His academic work explores journalism and politics, digital media, media theory, and the intersection of democracy and communication systems.

Currently, Prof George Nyabuga serves as the Associate Dean at the Aga Khan University’s Graduate School of Media and Communications (GSMC) in Nairobi, where he also coordinates the Executive Master’s in Media Leadership and Innovation. He taught journalism and media studies at the University of Nairobi for more than 13 years before joining Aga Khan University. Prof. George Nyabuga has also taught Journalism, and Media and Cultural Studies at the University of Worcester, and International Media and Communication, and Comparative Politics at Coventry University both in the United Kingdom

Before transitioning to academia, Prof George Nyabuga built a strong career in the Kenyan media. He served as Managing Editor of Weekend Editions(Saturday and Sunday) and Media Convergence at Standard Group. His editorial leadership contributed to the development of investigative and public interest journalism in Kenya. He currently sits on the Executive Council of the Kenya Editors’ Guild representing academia.

In addition to his academic and editorial work, Prof George Nyabuga also worked as Head of Communications at the African Network Information Centre in Mauritius and at Kenya’s Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), where he helped shape public communication policy.

The Kenya Editors Guild described him as a leader with “brains, impact, and legacy,” applauding his role in mentoring young journalists and strengthening professional standards in both media and academic spheres.

Prof George Nyabuga’s earned this distinction based on academic qualifications, experience, research impact, and professional and institutional contributions. Prof George Nyabuga’s recognition reflects a career defined by scholarship, public engagement, and a commitment to informed democratic discourse.

“Smart is stylish,” the Guild added in its tribute honoring a figure whose intellect and vision continue to influence generations of journalists and scholars.
