Family members, Luo leaders, and political leaders gathered in Wikondiek, Homa Bay County, to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Phoebe Asiyo. The former Karachuonyo Member of Parliament, who died on July 17 in North Carolina at the age of 93, is being remembered as a trailblazer in Kenya’s political and cultural history.

Dr. Asiyo broke ground in 1982 when she became the first woman elected to represent Karachuonyo in Parliament. She returned to the National Assembly in 1992 and played a pivotal role in shaping Kenya’s discourse on gender equality and women’s leadership.

“She led with grace, with decency, and quiet strength,” Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga said during the memorial. “The gender equity conversations we are having today exist because of the bold path she walked. Maendeleo ya Wanawake has never been the same since her leadership.”

Karachuonyo MP Adipo Okuome praised her for building bridges across political and community lines. “She loved peace. She loved development,” Okuome said. “I remember her for uniting us in Karachuonyo.”

The late leader’s son, Caesar Asiyo, expressed deep gratitude for the condolences pouring in from across the globe. “Mum was dearly loved, a mother and mentor to many,” he said. “The phone calls haven’t stopped people crying, sharing stories. It’s humbling to be her son.”

The Luo Council of Elders also paid tribute, recognizing Dr. Asiyo’s loyalty to Luo traditions and her advisory role within the community. Chair Nyandiko Ongadi described her as a “pillar of wisdom” whose guidance helped steer the council through many cultural transitions.

The late Asiyo’s public service legacy was matched by her strong cultural roots. She often blended traditional values with a progressive vision for women’s leadership, inspiring generations to push for equality without abandoning identity.

The late Dr. Asiyo’s influence extended beyond Kenya. She represented the country in global forums advocating for women’s rights and was often cited as a role model for female leadership on the continent.

Dr. Phoebe Asiyo’s death marks the end of a remarkable chapter in Kenya’s political history. Her memory now lives on through those she mentored and inspired across the nation. Plans for her final rites are underway, with leaders promising to honor her legacy with the dignity it deserves.
