Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has denied reports that he has been chosen to lead the united opposition into the 2027 general election, insisting no candidate has been agreed upon yet.
Speaking during an interview on TV47, the former Vice President said the opposition is still focused on uniting like-minded leaders before settling on a presidential flagbearer.
“I can tell you one thing with certainty we do not as yet have a presidential candidate, and we do not have a presidential running mate,” Kalonzo said. “We are building a united opposition and at the opportune time, we will give this country a presidential candidate and a running mate.”
He dismissed claims that he had been named as the opposition’s front-runner, with Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) leader Eugene Wamalwa as his running mate.
“We haven’t discussed anything like that,” he added.
The opposition alliance still in the making is made up of several prominent political figures, including Kalonzo Musyoka (Wiper), Martha Karua (PLP), Eugene Wamalwa (DAP-K), Justin Muturi (Democratic Party), and former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i. Also reportedly involved is former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, now associated with the Democratic Congress Party (DCP).
So far, the group has held political tours in different parts of the country, including Ukambani, the Mt Kenya region, and most recently, Western Kenya, where they spent two days meeting local leaders and supporters.
Behind the scenes, the alliance is said to be vetting potential candidates based on their national appeal, voter mobilisation ability, political experience and regional influence. But publicly, the message remains one of unity first, names later.
Kalonzo emphasised that whoever is eventually chosen will represent a coalition of reform-minded leaders.
“There’s enough space for all of us. Reformists, people who want to change this country for good,” he said.
