North Macedonia has formally recognized Morocco’s 2007 Autonomy Plan as the sole framework for resolving the long-standing dispute over Western Sahara. The announcement followed bilateral talks held Monday in Skopje between Morocco’s Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and his North Macedonian counterpart, Timčo Mucunski.

The statement, jointly signed by both officials, reaffirmed North Macedonia’s “longstanding support for the UN-led process” and emphasized the need for a “just, lasting, and mutually acceptable political solution.” “North Macedonia considers the Autonomy Plan, put forward by the Kingdom of Morocco in 2007, as the only basis for the settlement of this dispute,” the declaration stated.

Both countries voiced their support for UN Security Council Resolution 2756, passed in October 2024. The resolution calls on all parties to engage in good faith toward a realistic and enduring political agreement grounded in compromise. It also reinforces the central role of the UN in guiding the process.

In the joint statement, Bourita and Mucunski reiterated their governments’ backing for the efforts of the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy. The envoy’s mandate includes advancing dialogue in line with the UN Charter and previous resolutions.

This move adds North Macedonia to the growing list of nations endorsing Morocco’s autonomy plan, which offers the Sahrawi region self-governance under Moroccan sovereignty. The initiative has gained momentum in recent years, bolstered by diplomatic outreach led by King Mohammed VI and increasing international consensus around a pragmatic resolution.

Observers say the latest endorsement reflects shifting global attitudes toward the conflict and a preference for Morocco’s plan over stalled alternatives. Analysts describe the support as a sign of diplomatic alignment rooted in stability, legality, and practical governance.

The Western Sahara issue remains one of the most protracted territorial disputes under UN consideration. Morocco’s autonomy proposal has been on the table since 2007, and while talks have continued under UN guidance, a final agreement remains elusive.

The North Macedonian government’s stance strengthens Morocco’s position ahead of expected renewed negotiations and reinforces international support for a compromise-driven solution under UN supervision.
