Fuel prices in Kenya have gone up sharply once again, with the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) announcing new retail rates that take effect from July 15 to August 14, 2025.

In its latest monthly review released on Monday, EPRA raised pump prices by an average of Sh9 per litre, citing higher international landing costs of petroleum products and exchange rate pressures.

Petrol has been increased by Sh8.99 per litre, diesel by Sh8.67, and kerosene by Sh9.65.

In Nairobi, the new prices are:

  • Super Petrol: Sh186.31
  • Diesel: Sh171.58
  • Kerosene: Sh156.58

EPRA explained that the latest adjustment is due to a rise in the average landed cost of fuel between May and June 2025. During this period, the cost of imported Super Petrol rose by 6.45%, diesel by 6.27%, and kerosene by 6.95%.

Specifically:

  • Super Petrol went from USD 590.24 to USD 628.30 per cubic metre
  • Diesel rose from USD 580.23 to USD 616.59
  • Kerosene increased from USD 569.00 to USD 608.54

These prices include a 16% Value Added Tax (VAT) and reflect the requirements of the Finance Act 2023, the Tax Laws (Amendment) Act 2024, and adjusted excise duty rates under Legal Notice No. 194 of 2020.

EPRA also cited global market volatility and a strong US dollar as additional factors affecting fuel pricing. Kenya, which imports all its refined petroleum products, remains exposed to shifts in global energy benchmarks and currency fluctuations.

The USD/Kenyan Shilling exchange rate averaged 129.62 in June, slightly lower than the 129.78 recorded in April and May. However, international prices of refined fuel products remained high, despite a small dip in Murban crude oil prices from USD 72.63 per barrel in May to USD 67.73 in June.

The increase in fuel costs is expected to impact transport, manufacturing, and household budgets, with inflation already affecting electricity and food prices. Public concern is likely to rise as the cost of living continues to climb.
