Nairobi – Kenya Railways has resumed the Nairobi-bound Madaraka Express service following a technical disruption that halted operations on Sunday night, stranding hundreds of passengers at the Mombasa Terminus.

In a statement issued Monday morning, the state corporation confirmed that the Mombasa-to-Nairobi passenger train departed as scheduled at 8:00 a.m. after engineers resolved the technical fault. The issue, which forced the suspension of the 10:00 p.m. Sunday train, was described as a “technical hitch” with no further details provided.

“All affected passengers are advised to report to the Mombasa Terminus by 8:00 a.m. today. Tickets dated July 6, 2025, remain valid for travel,” the statement read.

The company also said it had made contingency plans to transport all affected passengers, including those who missed their scheduled departure.

“We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience,” the management said. “We assure the public that our team worked overnight to address the issue and restore normal service.”

Passengers who had arrived at the station on Sunday night were temporarily stranded after the abrupt cancellation. Kenya Railways did not disclose the exact nature of the fault but emphasized that safety was not compromised.

“We reiterate that the suspension was precautionary. Kenya Railways prioritizes passenger safety and comfort,” the statement added.

The disruption marks one of the rare halts in the Madaraka Express schedule, which operates between Kenya’s two largest cities on the Standard Gauge Railway line. Since its launch in 2017, the route has become a vital link for both commuters and tourists traveling between Nairobi and the coastal city of Mombasa.

As operations resume, Kenya Railways has appealed to the public for patience and understanding. There were no reports of injuries or incidents related to the delay.
